Frequently Asked Questions

What does "special character" mean?
For many "special character" schools a special character might be their religious or cultural character, for instance Catholic schools are considered to have a special character. At Unlimited our special character exists in relation to learning and to relationships.

Do I have to own my own laptop?
No. However about 60% of the students at Unlimited own or lease through MagnumMac an Apple Mac Laptop. If you don't have your own one, you can always borrow a laptop from our 'tech' library whenever you need one. For more information about purchasing or leasing a laptop with MagnumMac click here.

Is there a school uniform?
No, we have no school uniform. We're happy for everyone to wear what best reflects them as an individual, but we do ask you to be respectful of other people, which means choosing wisely in case you offend other people you are working and learning with.

What do I call the teachers?
We call our staff "learning advisers", and everyone - including the principal (which we call a director) - is on first name basis.

What's a trust licence?
Before you can make the most of learning in the middle of a city, you need to get a trust licence. This is not to say that you are not trusted without one, but that if you have one, then the school knows that
you are aware of the responsibilities which go with moving freely around the city to carry out learning, and you know how to keep safe.

The trust licence is to enable students to carry out learning projects and opportunities outside of the school. It is not for catching up with friends during school hours, or hanging out. The trust licence programme covers the following things:

  • safety in the city
  • emergency procedures
  • phone numbers
  • legal requirements
  • signing in and out
  • responsibilities
  • LA approval

What's Glide Time?
You can start your learning day at school anytime between 8.00am and 10.00am. You must complete a minimum of six hours each day at school (includes lunchtime). You may work through your six hours and finish school any time between 2.10pm (after community cleanup) and 4.00pm. Wednesday is not a glide-time day, and all students are expected at school by 9.00am. If you have a class at 8am or 9am,or 3pm or later, you need to attend it regardless of whether it disturbs your use of glidetime - class priorities take precedent over glidetime use. You cannot accumulate excess hours one day and transfer them to another day. You are required to attend school for a minimum of six hours each day.

Does every student have half-hour one-to-one meetings?
Every student - regardless of whether they are in classes or courses all day, everyday - has a one-to-one meeting with their learning advisor once a week. These are critical meetings and students must attend.
