Unlimited's Debating Team |
The UPT debating team participated in the Senior Press Cup Debating Competition on the 16th and 17th of May. The team, consisting of Finn Davis, Perry Carter and Cody Olivet spent a gruelling day on the Saturday debating the topics “That this House would create a Palestinian state, “That this House would create a Super City, and “That this house would become vegetarian. This was particularly challenging as the team only came together 2 weeks before the competition! If those four debates weren’t enough, they had to return on the Sunday morning for a 5th debate with the moot “That this house would fire the Directors of bailed out companies. It was a long and tiring weekend, but was an amazing experience for the team as well as Braden and myself. The team put in a huge amount of effort in the 2 weeks prior to the competition, meeting regularly to get their heads around the complex issue of a Palestinian state. As we were required to debate both the affirmative and negative sides of this topic, that proved particularly challenging! Although the team lost both of the Palestinian debates, it must be said that those losses were to teams that both made the semi-finals (and one which went on to win the competition). In addition to getting our head around the issues surrounding Israel and Palestine, for a little bit of light relief we spent time discussing the pros and cons of vegetarianism, the exciting topic (Ugh!) of creating a Super City and the economic principles behind company bailouts. If it hadn’t been for the regularly trips to the dairy by Braden, I’m not sure we would have made it through the two weeks of preparation! The best debate (from an audience point of view) was the Vegetarian debate, which was the final debate on the Saturday. The team were in their element in this debate and not only convincingly won the debate, but also showed great style in their speaking and thoroughly impressed the adjudicators. This no doubt contributed to the team’s eventual success in winning the competition’s trophy for the “Most Promising Team. (which can be viewed behind Karen’s desk) It must be noted that the winning team, Shirley Boys High, was the winner of the Most Promising Team trophy last year, so the expectations are high that our team will win the competition next year if we can keep the three of them at school! In addition to the overall success of the team, Finn Davis was awarded a place on the Canterbury Regional Schools’ Debating Squad for 2009. This will see Finn competing in the National competitions in August. As well as being an amazing experience for Finn, his success means that he now has regular access to the Canterbury Schools’ Debating Council coaches, so he will be able to share his learning with the team. We wish Finn the best of luck in the National competitions in August. Darcy Carter |
