Frances Martin
This course is designed for level 1 and 2 students interested in issues relating to teenage drug and alcohol use. We will spend time learning about the impact of drugs and alcohol on young minds and bodies but we’ll put the majority of our energy into planning a drug and alcohol free event for teenagers because, I think, it’s better to create cute alternatives to destructive behaviour than talk about how destructive it is. There are external exams at both levels on these issues but there will be other assessment opportunities for keen learners and proactive participants.

"How do you feel after eating that?
Sonrisa
I want to meet the needs & curiosities of students so there will be discussion about what we do, but here are some ideas:
why is sugar so bad? ; correlations between foods, autism, ADHD ; cooking with alt. ingredients (like quinoa and almond flour) ; why you should eat less stuff that comes in boxes or bags ; busting the myth that healthy is expensive ; looking at restricted diets (vegetarian, gluten-free etc) to make sure you are actually getting all the nutrients you need.
I would like to share some of the knowledge and experience I have gathered over the years about how what we eat effects us. I would also like to develop your ability to determine whether what you read or see in the media is total bs, developing your sense of scientific literacy.
Expect: research; discussion; experimentation in kitchen.

Tracey
Often described as ""the mother of all sciences"" it could be simpler to say, ""Geography is LIFE!""
Learn how to see your world through the lens of a geographer. Explore, examine, investigate, wonder, question and deduce as a geographer.
Geographic skills and concepts will be applied to a variety of contexts and scenarios negotiated with/chosen by students.

P.S. Students who are ready, willing and able to take it to another level, could qualify for Level 1 achievement standards.

"See through Body
KJ Davie
Finding out information about what is going on inside the body is a critical part of diagnosing disease and injury. One way to find out is to perform surgery to look directly inside the body. However, today we can obtain much of the same information without surgery by using of a variety of medical imaging techniques that show us pictures of the inside of our bodies. Yet, there are other methods of understanding our bodies, what is the Traditional Chinese Medicine of diagnosis? We will learn about our bodies and diseases as we investigate the new and different techniques of exploring and understanding our insides.

All LAs
ICL is an opportunity to work independently on a personalized project or area of learning that excites and motivates you to learn more. The focus and mode of learning for your ICL is negotiated with your HBLA. Think carefully about your intentions and purpose of your learning, the time frame in which it will occur, and the outcomes you are aiming to achieve. Some courses in the schedule have an ICL focus and support you within the topic outlined. To use the ICL opportunity effectively, students need good self-direction and study/project skills. Ask your LA for advice on courses that can help you develop the skills needed. If you choose to do an ICL, remember it is an opportunity for purposeful self-directed learning to occur and not a free time slot.
